Blog #14

Read “Hinduism and Buddhism,” and view the video clips. Answer the questions raised in the reading assignment and provide a synthesis of what you have learned from this assignment. This should include a summary of how these two world religions are portrayed, addressing religious and racial stereotypes and general themes in news and entertainment media. Can you compare and contrast how these two majors religions are treated vis-à-vis the other world religions discussed in class?

  1. Whenever I think about Hinduism, I immediately think of Apu in "The Simpsons." Apu works in a gas station shop and is Hindu. The show displays many stereotypes that individuals have about the Hindu faith. In America, we tend to mix up the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. We also are ignorant to what the religions actually believe in. I loved how the one video clip discussed that we assume that these religions are based on meditation and yoga-like behavior because this is how Americans are exposed to these groups. We also assume that these groups are believers in martial arts and karate. American film portrays a religious background to these activities, even though this representation is not accurate.

Many of these faiths are shown with Indian actors who have heavy accents and are very immersed in their culture. I do not believe that these individuals are portrayed as having the amount of conflict that Muslims have. I have always seen these groups as being very peaceful and content. I do not think that their religion is taken seriously in terms of beliefs, but is instead seen as a lifestyle choice.
